So you want to raise money for your non profit….
and you are thinking…”What do we do? How do we do it? Where do we start?”. Well….You are in luck. I work with non profits every day. This blog is going to lay out some simple ways to start raising money for your non profit organization. Whether you are a large multimillion dollar non profit, or just getting started, non profits all use similar ways to raise money.
The Gala: A formal engagement that is usually a black tie event. This usually attracts larger, higher income donors. Some non profit Galas raise $10,000 and some raise over $1,000,000 in one night. The big numbers don’t come over night. Usually the Galas that yield the big dollars have been around for years. People count on it from year to year. Many donors actually budget to attend the event and give a certain dollar amount every year.
Walks and Races: These kind of non profit events raise money by engaging the community and list of donors in a fun way. Unlike a Gala, a walk or race is fun and family oriented…so bring the kids! Usually your raised money comes from race registrations. It doesn’t have to be limited to registrations. You can have raffles, drawings, games, and prizes. Usually Walks and races don’t attract the same higher income demographic as a Gala, but usually attracts more people…meaning it can work in your favor. Walks and races also can attract cash sponsors. These sponsors donate money to have their name associated with your event. Remember that it may take a couple years to build up. Don’t expect a big name sponsor the first time you have an event.
In my opinion, this is a grossly under estimated way to raise money every month. The most difficult thing you run into is conveying your message online. That’s where great video comes in. We have worked with many non profits to create videos that convey the message quickly and clearly to the potential donor. What video can help with is getting the message and mission across in a quick concise way while using visuals and emotion. Your goal once you get people to your site, is to convince them as soon as possible that they should give to your cause. In my opinion, video is the best way to do that.
Your donors are your lifeblood. Without your donors, you have no money to run your non profit, and no resources to further your mission. Treat your donors like gold. Remember that there are thousands of causes that people have the opportunity to give to. If they have chosen you, you need to know why. Usually donors give to causes that matter to them. What is your non profit culture and mission? What is it that people are drawn to about your cause? Emphasize that. Work on refining that. The more refined your message is, the faster you will attract quality donors. Again, I come back to the use of video. Use videos to convey your message, and donors will follow.
That’s right. Elbow Grease. What do I mean? Work hard. Work HARDER than you think you should. A successful non profit is no different than a successful business. The more you work to refine your message, the better. Get out the word by meeting people. There are thousands of meet up groups, chambers of commerce, networking groups and more. There is no excuse to get out and make friends, and share your message. People love a good cause.
“People Love a good cause. You have the good cause….now find the people. “
I know there are many things I left out. The key here is to get you thinking differently about raising money for your non profit. Get out and meet people, make your message clear, and for goodness sake; leverage the power of internet video to do it. Oh….and hire us for that of course
